Uzbekistan implements projects on railroad electrification

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- State joint stock railway company “Uzbekistan temir yollari” (Uzbekistan Railways) is working on electrification of railroads Marokand-Karshi and Karshi-Termez, the press-service of the company said.
In 2011, the feasibility studies of the projects “Electrification of railroad Marokand-Karshi” (140 km) and “Electrification of railroad “Karshi-Tashguzar-Boisun-Termez” (325 km) were completed.
Total length of the railroad line makes up 466.5 km. Some 3,800 foundation and 3,500 supports of contact netwrosk were installed within the projects. Active construction works are under way at Gumbaz-Ulus-Jam-Ayritam-Alatun-Niguz-Kashkadarya.
Over 160 workers and specialists of construction and assembly organizations work at Marokand-Karshi and Karshi-Termez railroad. All conditions were created for their work. The projects envisage installation of modern computer networks with automated management system.
Implementation of the projects will help to cut exploitation expanses and increase speed of passenger and cargo transportation.
According to the project Marokand-Karshi, three duty points for service of contact networks and three traction sub-stations will be constructed, within the Karshi-Termez railroad – six traction sub-stations and six duty points will be constructed. These projects will create 400 additional jobs.
In the first quarter of 2013, some US$2.4 million were used within the Marakand-Karshi railroad and US$2.6 million within the Karshi-Termez line were used.
Implementation of two projects will allow to electrify 831.5 km of railroad Tashkent-Termez. The projects will cut primary cost on railway transportation and expand capacity of the railway due to increasing speed of trains.
Uzbekistan temir yollari attract loan of the Government of Japan for US$211 million to implementation of the project on electrification of railroad Karshi-Termez.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will issue loan for US$100 million to the second project on electrification of Marokand-Karshi railroad.
