Senior British diplomat visits Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Mr Colin Roberts, Director of Eastern Europe and Central Asia Directorate (EECAD) at the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office, paid an official visit to Uzbekistan from 23 May to 24 May 2013.
This was Mr Roberts’ first visit to Uzbekistan since his appointment as Director of EECAD in 2012.
The aim of his visit was to familiarise himself with the country and to meet key governmental officials, including Mr Elyor Ganiev, Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Mr Vladimir Norov, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Senator Sadyk Safaev, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the Oliy Majlis, Mrs Sayora Rashidova, Ombudswoman and Dr Akmal Saidov, Director of the National Human Rights Centre.
Mr Roberts discussed the further development of the bilateral relationship between the UK and Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, regional security and human rights. Mr Roberts also held meetings with representatives of civil society, foreign diplomats and British business people working in Tashkent.
Mr Roberts said: “I have had a number of productive exchanges with Uzbek counterparts on a range of important areas in our bilateral relationship. I look forward to continue working closely with my Uzbek colleagues, including planning the forthcoming visit of Senior Minister of State Baroness Warsi to Uzbekistan.”
Mr Colin Roberts, a career diplomat, started his work in the FCO in 1989 and has served in a number of countries, including Japan, France and Lithuania. Before assuming the role of Director of EECAD in 2012 Mr Roberts occupied a number of high level posts in the FCO, for instance, including as Director of Overseas Territories Directorate, Her Majesty’s British Antarctic Territory Commissioner and Her Majesty’s British Indian Ocean Territory Commissioner.
