SCO Foreign Ministries hold consultations in Moscow

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the member states and observer states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), as well as other interested sides held consultations to discuss regional security issues in Moscow on 22 January 2014.
Representatives of Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, India, Iran and Mongolia, Pakistan and Turkey participated at the consultations. Representatives of the UN, CSTO and Anti-Terrorism Center of CIS also attended the event.
The sides exchanged opinion on issues of ensuring regional security with focus on combating international tourism and religious extremism, illegal turnover of narcotics, organized crime, cyber crime and other challenges and threats of transboundary character.
The sides underlined that it is important to fight with terrorism and illegal opium economy in Afghanistan as important condition for achieving long-term safety and prosperity of the region. It was stated that solving these issues will require attention and collective efforts of international community.
Situation in Afghanistan is an important factor for regional safety in the context of withdrawal of international Safety Assistance Forces (ISAF) in 2014. The participants supported stable, safe, prosperous and single Afghanistan.
The participants underlined importance of providing international aid to Afghan national security forces to raise their capabilities and financial aid to prevent worsening of situation in security area after the ISAF mission completes.
The sides underlined that the UN should have coordination role in regional cooperation to achieve sustainable peace and security in Afghanistan and assist to its reconstruction and development.
The participants underlined that national peace should be achieved under guidance of Afghans and by the Afghans, which would help to speed up peace and stability in Afghanistan. The participants highly rated efforts of Afghanistan in ensuring regional security within process “Central Asia” as a regional initiative.
It was underlined that the SCO is planning to establish cooperation with the UN structures. Currently, it has been cooperating with the UN Office for Drug and Crime.
Majority of the participants called for boosting of cooperation between the SCO and interested states, international and regional organizations to ensure regional security and stability, to deepen trade-economic and cultural-humanitarian cooperation in the region.
It was underlined that the SCO is a convenient platform for dialogue and agreeing position on complex of issues on ensuring regional security.
The meeting was held in constructive mood and affirmed close views of the sides on considered issues.
