Russia, Uzbekistan to sign agreement on used nuclear fuel

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Russia and Uzbekistan will sign an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation on transfer of irradiated fuel from Uzbek research reactor INN-3M to Russia, RIA Novosti reported quoting statement of Rosatom.
The document will be signed on Wednesday between director-general of Rosatom Sergei Kirienko and head of State Inspection on supervision for geological study of entrails under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan Bakhtiyor Gulyamov.
In the result of the execution of the agreement, Uzbekistan will have no enriched nuclear fuel.
The statement said that the agreement will contribute to strengthening nuclear non-proliferation regime.
Earlier, Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Medvedev signed an order on approval of the agreement on 29 January 2014. The text of agreement was developed by Rosatom.
According to the agreement, Russia plans to return irradiated fuel of Russian production as UO2SO4 solution at the volume of over 30 liters and enriched uranium with U-235 isotope in the volume of 5 kg.
Irradiated fuel will be transferred to Russia for temporary technologic storage with further processing.
