Aral Sea, water management in Central Asia discussed in European parliament

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- European Parliament in Brussels hosted a roundtable titled “Problems of Aral Sea and issues of management of water resources in Central Asia”, Jahon news agency reported.
The roundtable was organized by the group of the members of European Parliament from Malta Claudette Abela Baldacchino, John Attard-Montalto, Marlene Mizzi and the diplomatic mission of Uzbekistan at the European Union.
Members of European Parliament, representatives of the state establishments of Belgium and the European Union, analytical and research centers in Brussels and Paris participated in the event.
During the event, the participants received information on situation in Aral Sea Basin, its ecologic and social-economic consequences, impact of crisis to health of people and current state of ecosystem of Aral Sea Basin. They also familiarized with efforts of Uzbekistan on mitigation of the crisis and its impact to health of people, and environment.
The participants also familiarized with principle position of Uzbekistan on use of water resources in the region, including construction of new hydro power stations in transboundary rivers of Central Asia. It was noted that interest of all sides should be considered at construction of such projects and adhere to international laws.
The film on situation in Aral Sea and efforts of Uzbekistan to mitigate negative impacts of this catastrophe to lives of people and environment.
The photo exhibition dedicated to Aral and nature and people of Aral Sea Basin was also demonstrated within the roundtable.
