Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Peace in Afghanistan cannot be reached with military force, President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov stated at the SCO summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on 12 September 2014.
Uzbek leader said that current situation in Afghanistan is characterized by permanent instability and tends to further aggravation. Islam Karimov expressed assurance that all interested sides in resolving Afghan problem have common view that peace in Afghanistan cannot be achieved with military force.
He said that several generations of Afghans rose during war years and they have no idea on peaceful life. As presidential elections in Afghanistan in June 2014 showed that people are tired of the endless bloodshed and violence, long-term poverty and devastation, and they want peace and stability, as well as have right to determine their own destiny, Islam Karimov said.
Uzbek leader said that delay of re-calculation of votes and announcement of official results of presidential elections in Afghanistan, as well as inauguration of new president create threat for stable future of the country.
“Such development of events is able to completely undermine internal political situation in the country, create a real threat to national security and the prospects for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan, prevent the achievement of a consensus in the negotiation process and form a coalition government, which would be represented by all battling parties and national-religious groups in Afghanistan,” Islam Karimov said.
“We must be aware that withdrawal International Security Assistance Force from Afghanistan could lead to growth of threats and volatility, expansion of terrorism and extremism activities and scale of drug trafficking not only in the vast region of Central Asia, but also far beyond its borders,” he stressed.
He said that in current situation destructive and terrorism groups can fill any vacuum, formed in Afghanistan.
Uzbek President said: “In these unpredictable conditions, we cannot exclude attempts by certain political forces and their supporting states sow chaos and aggravate situation in Afghanistan.” He said that situation in Iraq will be repeated.
President Islam Karimov underlined that Uzbekistan builds and will construct stable and friendship relations with Afghanistan based on national interests of two states and only on bilateral bases, providing support to the government, which is elected by Afghans.
