Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan supports the agreements reached in Minsk on peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian problem, President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov said at the SCO summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
“I would like to express, on behalf of Uzbekistan, our thoughts on regulating the Ukrainian problem,” Uzbek leader said.
“First, we support the agreements reached in Minsk on peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian problem, as well as suggestions and initiatives on this issue expressed and proposed by Ukraine and Russia,” he said.
Islam Karimov noted: “Second, I am convinced that suggestions initially proposed by the Uzbek side as early as on 4 March 2014, which say that the most optimum and effective resolution of the problem is to hold direct, I repeat again, direct negotiations on stopping the confrontation in Ukraine and reaching peace in the country between Ukraine and Russia, still remain topical and are affirmed today as well”.
“I am convinced that if the Ukrainian side behaved, as they say, itself objectively, then I think, above all, it was necessary to hold exactly such kind of direct talks. I do not see any other solution,” Islam Karimov underlined.
“Third, in any negotiations on the Ukrainian problem, the time-honoured interests of Russia, which have taken shape historically over very many centuries, should be taken into account. It would be a serious mistake not to take into account Russia’s interests in this region and relations that have always formed between Ukraine and Russia,” the Uzbek leader said.
