New project on climate resilience of farming communities launched in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A seminar of the joint project of the Government of Uzbekistan, the UNDP and Adaptation Fund of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) “Developing climate resilience of farming communities in the drought prone parts of Uzbekistan” was held in Tashkent on 22 October 2014.
UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan Mr. Stefan Priesner said that supporting projects on preserving environment and adaptation to climate change, UNDP contributes to supporting social well-being.
He said that the project will be implemented in Karakalpakstan, heating of the weather in last several years concerns. This creates serious challenge for Aral Sea Basin.
This project aims to develop climate resilience in farming and pastoral communities in the drought-prone Karakalpakstan region of Uzbekistan. The project will develop institutional and technical capacity for drought management and early warning, establish climate resilient farming practices on subsistence dekhkan farms, effect landscape level adaptation measures for soil conservation and moisture retention, and widely foster knowledge of climate resilient agricultural and pastoral production systems in arid lands.
The project with the cost of US$5.2 million is financed due to resources of Adaptation Fund of the UNFCCC and the UNDP. It will be implemented within six years.
Uzgidroment is a national executive agency. The project is implemented in cooperation with Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management, State Nature Committee, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Finance, Council of Ministers of Karakalpakstan, local administrations, and farmers.
