Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) is implementing the third programme of rendering assistance, located along Aral Sea Basin, for 2011-2015.
The programme is developed by Executive Committee of the IFAS in cooperation with the UN agencies, World Bank, ADB, EU and other donor countries. It is expected to direct US$8.5 billion to implementation of over 300 projects. The first two stages were implemented in 1995-2010.
Head of the agency of IFAS Normuhammad Sheraliev said that many projects are implemented to ensure rational use of water resources and improving ecologies. He said that over 400,000 hectares of forest were created in dried bottom of the Aral Sea. He said that the height of saksauls reached 4-5 meters and they help to prevent movement of salts in air. Birds and animals are returning due to improvement of situation in the area.
Within these programmes, Central Asian states carried out significant work on development of mechanisms on joint management of water resources of Aral Sea Basin, rehabilitation of ecologic catastrophe zones, providing clean water to population and improving health of population. Member states of IFAS directed over US$2 billion to realization of projects for 2003-2010. The donor assistance made up just 1% of the sum.
At development of the programme, the action plan adopted at international conference “Problems of Aral, its impact to gene fund of population, flora and founa and measures of cooperation to mitigate its consequences”, which was held in Tashkent in March 2008 at the assistance of the UN. The document envisages implementation of projects in nine areas such as water supply and development of communal service, improving soil condition, improvement of healthcare, education and science, development of transport infrastructure, fighting desertification and protecting environment. There were over 100 projects for about US$1.5 billion.
In 2013, the measures for US$1.3 billion soums were implemented in Aral Sea Basin in 2013, in particular, small local water reservoirs were created at delta of Amudarya, creation of forests, etc.
