Uzbekistan cuts twice areas under cotton

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan decreased twice areas under cotton to solve food problems, the statement of the Ministry of Economy of Uzbekistan said.
Uzbekistan has unique natural-climate conditions for growing practical all main types of agriculture cultures. Fruits and vegetables, produced in Uzbekistan, have great taste and consumer quality, and popular in the world, the ministry said.
The ministry underlined that Uzbekistan put a strategic goal on achievement of wheat and food independence in short period of time, and provide population with main food products due to own production.
To solve food problems the country decreased twice areas under crop, while freed areas were used to production of food cultures, including wheat, fruits and vegetables, potatoes, grapes, melons and gourds, as well as forage cultures.
In the result, Uzbekistan increased production of wheat from 1 million tonnes to over 8 million tonnes, fruits and vegetable products – from 4 million tonnes to 16 million tonnes.
Share of cotton in total production of agriculture goods does not exceeds 9%, while share of grain makes up 8.5%, fruit and vegetables, as well as grape – 30%, potatoes – 11% and products of animal husbandry exceeds 40%.
