Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Adaptation of aquaculture and culture-based fisheries to climate change, improving phytosanitary control services, combatting desertification, land degradation and drought, and locust control are among the challenges covered by four FAO projects put forward for Uzbekistan.
A delegation from Tashkent visited the FAO Subregional Office for Central Asia this week in Turkey and signed project agreements.
Two FAO technical cooperation projects will contribute to strengthening the capacity of Uzbekistan’s national phytosanitary control services, and adapting aquaculture and culture-based fisheries to climate change.
A project on locust management under the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme, and a Global Environment Facility project that aims at mainstreaming and scaling up sustainable land management, were also endorsed by Uzbekistan.
The delegation was led by Yashin Khidirov, Deputy Minister with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources. While in Ankara, the group also held meetings with the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, and with the Soil Research Institute of Turkey’s Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock.
Since 2001, FAO cooperation with Uzbekistan has been growing, with technical assistance to further develop the agricultural sector, sustainable management of natural resources and increased resilience of rural populations to climate change.
The Organization’s presence in Uzbekistan was reinforced in June 2014 with the host country agreement signed between FAO and Government of Uzbekistan and inauguration of an FAO country office in Tashkent by Uzbekistan Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev and FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva.
