Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The World Bank Group, in cooperation with the company “SGS Tashkent” and the Rural Restructuring Agency, launched a series of workshops today to help educate food safety consultants and farmers on Global G.A.P., an internationally recognized certification system that will help boost exports and growth.
Fifteen food safety consultants and 60 farmers attended the first Global G.A.P. workshops in Tashkent, Ferghana and Samarkand. One of the world`s leading farm assurance systems, Global G.A.P., focuses on food safety and other significant elements of Good Agricultural Practice. A Global G.A.P certification will help Uzbek farmers increase profitability, expand their markets and boost exports.
Abdimurad Mukhamadiev, a farmer from Tashkent who participated in the training, said “Global G.A.P. is a much needed standard not only for Uzbekistan, but for Central Asia in general, and will help make our products more competitive globally. Implementing Global G.A.P. will also help us increase exports, which will help improve the economic development of our country.”
“We decided to offer the workshops after seeing significant interest in Global G.A.P. certification from Uzbek farmers,” said Olga Sherbina, IFC Project Manager for Agribusiness Standards. “Many of them have already faced demands for Global G.A.P. certification from potential customers in various countries and have realized how they can sell more produce at higher prices if they have the necessary certificates.”
Supported by the Austrian Finance Ministry IFC’s Agribusiness Standards Advisory Program in Europe and Central Asia has helped attract more than $156 million of investment in over 80 IFC clients in Europe and Central Asia. This has generated $323 million in increased sales, in addition to greater efficiency and cost savings, and improved waste and risk management and brand value.
The World Bank Horticulture Development Project is assisting horticulture farmers, many of whom are small and poor, to increase their farms’ productivity and incomes. Both projects promote shared prosperity by supporting the growth and development of small and medium enterprises in rural areas, creating more and better paying jobs in the agro-processing, trading and export sectors, and increasing the value added for the agricultural sector.
