Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- New premises of Mercy Home No. 6, which were built by “You are not alone” foundation, have opened in Samarkand. The opening event was attended by Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva and her husband Timur Tillyaev.
The orphanage was founded in 1943 during the Second World War. Its old building - which was in a state of disrepair and was home to over 100 children - used to be the premises of a prosecutor’s office in the past, and hence was poorly adapted for children’s needs.
It was decided to build new premises for the orphanage following Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva’s visit to the Mercy Home in January 2013.
The new Mercy Home was built in an area covering 2.1 hectares of land in downtown Samarkand.
“The new premises project involved leading architects, educators and psychologists, who worked on it scrupulously and with a great attention to detail, in order to provide children with all the facilities necessary for their comfortable living, and to create an environment conducive to children’s development and education,”Mrs Karimova-Tillyaeva said, commenting on the opening of the new Mercy Home.
A total of 127 children, 42 girls and 85 boys, aged between 7 and 16, have moved to their new Home. The newly-built facilities of the orphanage cover an area of 7,876 sq.m.
The new premises comprise nine separate buildings, including residential blocks for boys and girls. There are 28 bedrooms, 34 shower rooms and 21 lavatories.
Premises for extracurricular activities include a large events hall designed to accommodate 90 people, a well-equipped library, as well as training rooms where children can develop their skills in the areas of their interest: arts, mathematics, chemistry, IT, choreography, drama, musical instruments and vocal. Children can also receive training in skills, that may prove useful in the future, such as sewing, cooking, hairdressing, woodwork, pottery, etc.
The Mercy Home has also been provided with advanced sporting facilities, including a swimming pool, a large multi-purpose sports hall and a footballpitch. The Mercy Home’s courtyard has been fitted out with sporting facilities, playgrounds and a summer amphitheatre, where children can enjoy their leisure time and participate in various outdoor activities.
A new medical unit, which has been fitted out with advanced equipment, comprises the offices of dentist, physiotherapy and exercise therapy.
“It is my sincere hope that the new home will mark a new stage in the life of our children and that they will find their way in this world and get a good upbringing and education,”Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva said on the opening of the new Mercy Home.
“You are not alone” foundation was funded by Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva in 2002 to provide comprehensive assistance to children left without parental care. One of the priority areas of the foundation’s work is to create conditions close to the home environment for children brought up in orphanages. The foundation has built and reconstructed a number of orphanages in Tashkent, Samarkand and Chirchik, providing them with state-of-the-art facilities. It also backed major renovation and reconstruction work in a number of institutions for people with special needs.
