Legal bases of food security discussed in Uzbek capital

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Tashkent hosted a roundtable dedicated to the legal bases of ensuring food security, which was organized by the Committee on Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis on issues of ecology and protection of environment and the Committee on Legislative Chamber on international affairs and inter-parliamentary relations.
MPs, officials of ministries and departments, representatives of research institutes and universities and others participated in the event, the information service of the Legislative Chamber said.
The participants noted that there is deficit of food products in the world, which causes social and political problems. In these conditions, Uzbekistan adopts measures on ensuring food safety of the country.
At the event, it was underlined that Uzbekistan pays attention to food security from the first days of the independence. Uzbekistan created firm legal base for food security.
At the opening of international conference “On important reserves of realization of food programme in Uzbekistan”, the Uzbek leader Islam Karimov said that Uzbekistan has unique soil and climate conditions and there are 320 solar days a year in average. It was underlined that peculiarity of agriculture season makes Uzbekistan as reliable base for stability, practically can ensure supply of food products and melons.
According to data of international organizations, currently about 1 billion people or each eighth person suffer from insufficient nutrition.
Associate professor of Tashkent State Agriculture University Z. Norboev said that ecological problems and worsening of soil due to use of chemical pesticide decreases areas, used for production of food products. He said that Uzbekistan carries out work on preventing such ecological problems. He added that the participants of the meeting exchanged opinion on further improving of these measures.
Currently, Uzbekistan decreased areas for such water demanding agriculture cultures as cotton and rice. Uzbekistan uses these areas for creation of intensive fruit gardens and vineyards, pays attention to irrigated lands to produce grain and vegetables. This helped to save money.
At the event, the participants also studied international norms and analyzed legislation in the sphere. It was noted that it is necessary for further improving legislation and law enforcement.
It was underlined that it is necessary to introduces changes and amendments to the law “On quality and security of food products”, “On technical regulation”, “On seed-growing”, “On protection of consumer rights”, “On veterinary” and others.
The corresponding recommendations were developed at the event.
