Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov held talks in Moscow on 23 February 2018.
Lavrov said that the talks were friendly and confidential, as it should be between friends, allies and strategic partners, the press service of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Russian Foreign Minister underlined that during the talks, the sides highly appreciated the level of relations between two nations. The relations are developing according to the agreements, which were reached between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The Uzbek and Russian officials discussed implementation of the agreements, which were reached during the state visit of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Russia in April 2017. It was stated that the trade turnover between two states grew by almost 35% in 2017 and reached almost US$4 billion.
Lavrov thanked Uzbekistan for traditional support of Russia’s priorities in the UN, including issues of international information security, transparency and confidence in space, inadmissibility of the heroization of Nazism and a number of other initiatives that Russia and Uzbekistan support and promote.
According to Lavrov, Russia always supports the ideas that Uzbekistan offers to the international community. One of such initiatives is the upcoming March International Conference on Afghanistan "Peace Process, Cooperation in the Sphere of Security and Regional Cooperation". The initiative of holding this forum was put forward by Uzbekistan in January at the UN Security Council.
Abdulaziz Kamilov and Sergey Lavrov also discussed preparations for this very important and significant event.
Lavrov expressed concern over the growing presence of the "Islamic state" in Afghanistan, especially in the northern regions of Afghanistan, which has borders with the CIS countries. According to him, a network of camps for the training of militants is being formed there.
During the meeting, it was noted the need to continue to mobilize all available formats for the promotion of the Afghan settlement, including the so-called "Moscow format" and the contact group "SCO-Afghanistan".
Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov signed a program of Cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of two states for 2018-2019. The document will stimulate a systematic and planned approach to interaction between foreign ministries.
