Honeywell (HON) sees opportunities in both the oil and gas, and building and construction sectors in Uzbekistan, President - High Growth Regions, Turkey & Central Asia (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) Frans van Deursen told UzDaily.
Can you please inform us about Honeywell’s plans on expansion in Uzbekistan, vision and strategies? Could you please share your future expectations in Uzbekistan market?
Honeywell has a long-standing history in Uzbekistan and has been committed to supporting industrial growth here for more than 20 years. Our local presence was established as part of a joint venture with Himavtomatika in 1998, and today includes engineering, sales and business support functions. Uzbekistan belongs to Honeywell’s “Turkey & Central Asia” High Growth Region – these are regions around the world where Honeywell expects to see significant growth in, during the next few years.
In particular, we see opportunities in both the oil and gas, and building and construction sectors in Uzbekistan. New capital-intensive infrastructure projects such as Tashkent City are a natural fit for our portfolio of building technologies that make buildings smarter.
In the oil and gas sector, customers increasingly want to drive more business intelligence from the large quantities of performance and operational data their infrastructures are generating every day. Because Honeywell provides the sensors and other operational hardware, the software, services and cybersecurity solutions, and the data analytics tools needed to comprehensively digitalize these types of operations, we are particularly well-positioned to support the industry’s move into a new era of fully connected operations.
How can you comment Honeywell’s strategic plans on introduction of Smart Buildings & Cities through strategic partnerships in light of current changes and developments in Uzbekistan? Within this framework, do you think local developer-companies will be cooperating to adopt these new technologies into their future projects?
Uzbekistan’s urban regeneration of Tashkent City is an exciting project; a statement that the city is open for business. It’s an opportunity to create a new urban environment based on technology and innovation that attracts investment and supports growth.
For Honeywell, it is the perfect location for our portfolio of smart building hardware and software, which works in harmony to give operators unrivalled levels of control over every aspect of their buildings – from energy efficient intelligent heating, air conditioning and lighting, to extremely secure access systems and CCTV.
We make it easy for developers to install our solutions, not only by providing them with the right technologies but also because we have a local presence and long heritage of doing business here. We continue to invest in-country as part of our localization commitment, through new training capabilities and partnerships with academic institutions. In that respect, we operate as a local company but with the backing and technical capabilities of a global $35 billion technology multinational.
Honeywell’s cutting-edge technologies are famous for IoT. What are your thoughts on adopting IoT and digital transformation to support safer and more sustainable environment in Uzbekistan? What kind of tools and technology can be integrated into private housing sector as well as public hospitals and educational establishments?
The fourth industrial revolution, which describes how the lines between humans and machines are becoming blurred and how industries are becoming increasingly digital and connected, is radically changing how companies in all industries operate.
One of the core components of Industry 4.0 is the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). IIoT describes how previously unconnected technologies, such as sensors, meters and other data generating components within an industrial operation, can be connected to generate vast quantities of operational data. By analyzing this data in the right way, companies can get a much clearer picture of where performance gains can be enabled, where maintenance might be required before an issue arises, and where adjustments can be made to improve efficiency. All this results in greater profitability and growth.
As internet bandwidth in Uzbekistan increases, and industries digitalize more of their infrastructure, the potential for IIoT becomes almost endless. From petrochemical facilities that can automatically notify operations of a potentially worn component before it results in unscheduled downtime, to buildings, such as schools, hospitals and offices, that intelligently adapt heating based on occupancy rates to improve energy efficiency. Industries across Uzbekistan are ready to capitalize on advancements like these and it makes it a particularly exciting time to be doing business here.
Can you share any details with regards to corporate and social responsibility in Uzbekistan? Do you plan any initiatives in this area?
Honeywell is committed to supporting not only the industries, but also the communities of the countries in which it does business. In Uzbekistan, this is no different. Here we focus heavily on supporting the next generation of Uzbek engineers and scientists as they prepare for a career in technology and engineering. This includes conducting regular lectures and master classes on technology, and cooperating closely with acedemic institutions including Tashkent State Technical University, IT University, Chemical University, and the Tashkent branch of Moscow State University.
For example, earlier this year Honeywell modernized its Honeywell Simulation and Training Center at Tashkent State Technical University with latest technologies. This means students are now being trained on some of the industry’s most advanced solutions to help meet the growing demands of modern industrial production.
We know that Honeywell is a key partner to Oil & Gas and Chemical industry of Uzbekistan with multiple training programs and training centres. Can you tell us about the accomplished workload and projects of the training centres in Uzbekistan?
In-country customer training is hugely important. It supports localization, and helps operators learn new system capabilities, maintain regulatory compliance, and train on some of the world’s most advanced technologies to help minimize downtime during plant operations. This is why we have just enhanced and opened our new training facility in Tashkent – the Honeywell Orion Technology Center, to give customers access to the newest technologies designed to help them better understand what is happening in their plant operations, and identify opportunities for performance improvements.
What is the main purpose of the new upcoming training centre? What are the core capabilities and scope of work of the centre?
Honeywell’s new Orion Technology Center is the result of a major overhaul of our existing facilities located in our Tashkent office. The center has been upgraded to feature Honeywell’s Experion Orion Console – the first time the technology has been installed at a training center in the Central Asia region.
Designed for complex refineries and processing plants, the Experion Orion Console is an advanced display technology that brings the plant control room of the future to life. It provides today’s increasingly mobile, connected plant operators with a single view of plant processes and operations, simplifying control system management, reducing operator fatigue, and improving situational awareness of operations across the infrastructure.
We’re delighted to soon be welcoming 112 employees of Oltin Yo’l GTL as the first training delegation to use the new facility’s technologies, which also includes our Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS). This tool connects people, with processes and business and asset management data across facilities via a unified automation system to provide safer, and more proactive, reliable, efficient and responsive operations.
