Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbek experts from various ministries and departments visited Ukraine to study experience in assessing the environmental impact of the construction and operation of a nuclear power plant, handling radioactive waste, creating and operating radioactive waste disposal sites, and environmental review of projects as part of the project for the construction of nuclear power plants.
The program of the visit included a visit to the KIEP Institute (Kiev Research and Design Institute Energoprojekt), a meeting at the Ministry of Ecology and the State Ecological Inspectorate of Ukraine, NAEC Energoatom (operator of all nuclear power plants in Ukraine), a visit to the exclusion zone and Chernobyl nuclear power plant, as well as a meeting with the leadership of the State Administration of the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (GAS).
KIEP held a meeting with Chairman of the Board Yuri Malakhov and senior officials. This institute carries out the design of nuclear power plants, starting from the construction of nuclear power plants and ending with their decommissioning. EIA projects (Environmental Impact Assessment) of nuclear power plants are also being developed here and organization representatives take part in public EIA hearings together with the customer.
The members of the delegation of Uzbekistan were informed in detail about the EIA preparation mechanism, and also received answers to their questions. Modern methods make it possible to obtain a reliable picture of the safe activities of modern nuclear power plants.
It is also important to note that the lessons learned by Ukraine after the events related to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant gave the country great experience in preventing such extraordinary events, minimizing the consequences, and in general on the safe organization of the peaceful atom sphere.
Nuclear power plants for modern Ukraine - in different years, this is half or more of the total electricity generated in the country. Today in Ukraine there are 4 nuclear power plants with 15 power units, while one of them - Zaporizhzhya NPP with 6 WWER power units with a total installed capacity of 6,000 MW, is the largest in Europe.
Issues of modern approaches to EIA, environmental benefits from the use of peaceful atom were discussed during a visit by the delegation of the Ministry of Ecology of Ukraine. It was emphasized here that, as Ukrainian experience shows, the introduction of nuclear power plants in the energy balance will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.
The visit program of the delegation of Uzbekistan also included a visit to the facilities of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and the exclusion zone, as well as a meeting with the leadership of the State Administration of the exclusion zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Representatives of Uzbekistan were able to directly verify what was done after the 1986 accident, what measures were taken, and also visited the 4th power unit of the nuclear power plant, where the accident occurred and in the repository for spent nuclear fuel. We got acquainted with the measures taken in terms of environmental impact of these facilities and made sure that the negative impact on the environment does not occur.
The Chernobyl NPP was once equipped with RBMK reactors, which after the accident were sequentially shut down from 1991 to 2000. All reactors operating in Ukraine today are of the VVER type, two of them are VVER-440 and thirteen reactors are VVER-1000.
A meeting was also held with representatives of the State Ecological Inspectorate of Ukraine, where issues were discussed and the experience of examination of EIA projects, inspections at nuclear power plants and spent nuclear fuel storage facilities was studied.
Today, in terms of the number of VVER-type power reactors, Ukraine occupies 10th place in the world and fifth in Europe. For this country, nuclear energy is a guarantee of the country's livelihoods, one of the important components in economic activity and energy supply of the population. Ukraine has gained vast experience in the efficient and safe operation of nuclear power plants, which it is ready to share with Uzbekistan.
