Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 28 January 2020, negotiations were held in Tashkent between the working groups of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan to discuss the joint construction of a hydroelectric power station on Zarafshan River in the Republic of Tajikistan.
For this purpose, a representative delegation of Tajikistan, headed by Deputy Minister of Energy and Water Resources Shoimzoda Jamshed Shodi, arrived in the country.
As was noted during the talks by the First Deputy Minister of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, the subject of discussion is the draft agreement between the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan on the procedure and conditions for shared participation in the construction and operation of hydroelectric stations on the Zarafshan River.
After reaching certain agreements, more detailed details will be spelled out in the Agreement on the purchase of electricity and the development of a feasibility study for the project.
The construction of hydropower plants is planned to be carried out in stages: first, the construction of the Yavan hydroelectric station with an estimated cost of US$282 million, a capacity of 140 MW and the generation of 700-800 million kWh of electricity.
At the next stage, the parties will consider the possibility of building a hydroelectric station on the Fandarya River with an estimated cost of US$270 million, a capacity of 135 MW and the generation of 500-600 million kWh of electricity.
The constructed hydroelectric power stations will generate up to 1400 million kWh of ecological clean electricity exclusively for the needs of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
The project will also help support the peak capacity of the unified energy system and create additional jobs during the joint construction and operation of hydroelectric power stations, as well as the flow of electricity to other regions of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan on a parity basis.
As noted by the Tajik side, "this meeting is the first step towards the implementation of the project and expresses the will of the leaders of the two states." The delegation also noted the speed of ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan in the field of energy.
We add that the study of the issue of the joint construction of two hydroelectric power stations with a total capacity of 320 MW on the Zarafshan River in Tajikistan was provided for in the Joint Statement of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the President of the Republic of Tajikistan signed on 17 August 2018.
Subsequently, the specified event was reflected in the “Road Map” approved by the decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
