Uzbekistan and Tajikistan strengthen investment, trade and economic cooperation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 14 April 2020, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan Sardor Umurzakov held a video conference with the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan Azim Ibrokhim. This was reported by the MIIVT press service.
During the dialogue, measures taken by the governments of both countries aimed at counteracting the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, ensuring the security of citizens of both countries and mitigating the economic consequences of global crisis phenomena associated with the epidemic, as well as prospects for bilateral cooperation in this direction were discussed.
Topical issues of the development of mutually beneficial investment, trade, economic, transport and logistics cooperation, implementation of joint industrial cooperation projects, as well as a package of specific mutual measures, the adoption of which under current conditions will expand the range and increase the volume of trade, primarily due to supplies of competitive products of Uzbek and Tajik production.
It was agreed that, in order to accelerate progress in these areas, expert consultations will be held on a regular basis in the form of video conferencing, during which mutual agreements reached within the framework of the 6th meeting of the Joint Uzbek-Tajik Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation will be worked out.
Separately, measures to strengthen cooperation between the relevant departments of the two countries on simplified customs, phytosanitary and quarantine control, as well as the intensification of the use of the trade finance mechanism offered by Uzbek banks to Tajik entrepreneurs in the amount of up to US$100 million, were separately mentioned.
The issues of organizing the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission and the Uzbek-Tajik Business Council were also worked out. The parties agreed to continue joint work in preparation for these events and to substantively explore new opportunities for investment and trade and economic cooperation.
