UNDP, TIKA partner to develop bee farming sector in Aral Sea region

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Within the UN Joint Programme "Sustaining Livelihoods Affected by the Aral Sea Disaster" a launching ceremony of the two new mini-workshops on honey canning and wax production was held in Nukus and Amudarya districts of Karakalpakstan.
The purpose of this initiative is to expand the best practices of the UN Joint Programme in ensuring economic and food security in the region through creating enabling environment for further development of the bee farming sector. With the financial assistance of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), the UN Joint Programme organized the purchase and installation of equipment for establishing mini-plants in Nukus and Amudarya districts of Karakalpakstan.
At the opening ceremony of those mini-plants, Mr. Suleiman Kiziltoprak, head of the representative office of TIKA in Uzbekistan, Mr. Farid Garakhanov, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Uzbekistan, representatives of regional and local authorities of Karakalpakstan, local experts and UN Joint Programme staff have participated. During the opening ceremony, the representatives of donor agencies were demonstrated the wax production (which is an essential part for the development of a bee hives) and honey canning process with in local branding, and the locally trained specialists also responded questions of the participants of the event.
The UN Joint Programme, during its implementation period has supported 58 local dehkan and farmers of Amudarya, Kanlikul and Shumanai districts, through providing them bee boxes with all the necessary equipment (wax, bees, etc.). As a result, 58 beekeepers have significantly improved their economic situations and also were able to create additional jobs, thus increasing opportunities for other interested farmers in their communities. The development of beekeeping, in addition to providing natural honey, also has a positive impact to environment, it helps to improve the biodiversity by massive pollination of vegetables on the plots of the beekeepers and adjacent areas.
In the process of establishing above workshops, in cooperation with the Association of beekeepers of Uzbekistan, Forestry department, Chamber of commerce, and Farmers’ Association, the UN Joint Programme has organized a training for beekeepers of Karakalpakstan on development of the sector, effective maintenance, definition and prevention of the bee diseases, and marketing of natural honey. Also, an International expert conducted a practical training for the local specialists on the management of the installed equipment in the newly created mini-plant. The locally appointed workers under the guidance of the international expert made the first wax product, which previously was not available locally and had be to delivered from other regions of Uzbekistan.
The event participants noted the importance of this joint initiative of the UNDP and TIKA to improve the economic, environmental and social well-being of local residents living in the ecologically disaster area due to drying of the Aral Sea. It was also noted that there is a need to continue further cooperation with international organizations in order to further assist to mitigate the consequences of environmental disaster and to achieve the tasks specified in the relevant state programmes.
During the visit to Karakalpakstan, the representatives of the TIKA and UNDP also observed the process of honey collection in the field, visited a project site for the breeding of bees in the village community of Kipchak in Amudarya district. Also the guests visited the sewing workshop at the society for the disabled, which was supported by the UN Joint Programme through provision of sewing equipment to create jobs for women with disabilities.
