UN delegates pay tribute to late Uzbek President

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 16 September, the delegates of the plenary session of the 71st session of the General Assembly of UN paid tribute to memory of the First President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov, the UN News Center said.
Attending were representatives of UN member-states, the president of the General Assembly’s current session and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moo delivered a speech. He said: “I join with all of you in extending our condolences to the bereaved family of the late president of Uzbekistan.”
“As the first president of the independent Republic of Uzbekistan, Mr. Karimov undertook wide-ranging efforts to further the economic and social development of his country.”
Ban Ki-moon credited Karimov’s promotion of the Central Asian Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone, a treaty that took effect in 2009 and comprises of five states of the Central Asian region.
