Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan has substantial renewable energy potential, which is still largely untapped. According to the preliminary estimates, total potential of biogas in Uzbekistan is estimated to exceed 8.9 billion cubic meters annually. As the calorific value, this corresponds to 6.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, accounting for more than 10% of annual demand for energy in Uzbekistan.
On November 23, 2016, the biggest biogas facility was opened in Bulakbashi district of the Andijan region. The opening ceremony was attended by Stefan Priesner, the UN Resident Coordinator, Doniyorbek Maksudov, khokim of Bulakbashi district, representatives of the regional Khokimiyat and the regional department of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade, as well as farmers, mahalla activists, and ordinary citizens.
Mr. Maksudov opened ceremony with welcoming speech where he noted that constructive work carried out in the district, implementation and introduction of "green" technologies are significant not only for the village or district’s population, but also for the region and the Republic as a whole. It was also noted that the use of new and advanced technologies by local population will improve economic performance and play an important role in boosting export potential.
In his speech, Mr. Stefan Priesner expressed his gratitude for warm reception and was particularly pleased to note that the creation of such a large-scale biogas facility will contribute to the development of economic and ecological potential of the region and will be an excellent example for further effective implementation of innovative practices.
The pilot biogas facility, built on the territory of LLC “Davron Agrosanoat” with the support of the “Aid for Trade” project together with the Ministry for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade, will facilitate the introduction of “green” practices into agricultural practices. . The project is beneficial not only from environment point of view but also financially. It is expected that use of new biogas plant will contribute to reduction of CO2 emission into atmosphere (estimated reduction of CO2 will be 330 tons per season). In addition, costs efficiency will be reached by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers. Organic fertilizers, obtained from the biogas facility, are expected to improve yields of fruits and vegetables by 4% per season, which will lead to an increase in eco-friendly high-quality agricultural products.
The new 400 m3 volume biogas plant is the largest in the region. Alternative energy source will provide heat for 0.5 hectare greenhouse during the preparation of tomato and cucumber seedlings for the season, which will result in early harvest and help to increase the volume of exports. In addition to providing heat, biogas plant will also provide ready-to-use bio-fertilizers.
"We have been working on this project for a long time. Project started with a simple curiosity and gradually gained a vital importance. Indeed, the gas produced from widely available raw materials became a solution in meeting our basic heating needs. The convenience and advantage of this method lies in using locally available raw materials, obtaining biofertilizers from used products, and in the cold season, it saves energy spent on heating and other needs. I think that in near future we can increase our harvest yields by using biogas "- said the head of OOO "Davron Agrosanoat" Mr.Ravshan Nosirov.
It should be noted that UNDP, through its various projects, consistently supports Uzbekistan in advancing renewable energy. In particular, UNDP has assisted in developing a national standard for biogas plants, which was adopted in 2013. The Cabinet of Ministers adopted a program for promoting the construction of biogas plants in livestock and poultry farms in November 2015. This project aims to demonstrate biogas as a source of renewable energy and may be an alternative to traditional energy sources used in greenhouses in growing agricultural products and thus expand the export potential of the local agricultural producers.
