Uzbekistan, Afghanistan discuss perspectives of developing trade-economic relations

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan and Afghanistan held the second session of a joint commission on trade, transport and energy on 26 December 2016.
The session was co-chaired by the Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade of Uzbekistan Elyor Ganiev and Senior Advisor of President of Afghanistan on economic issues Humayun Kayumi.
The first session of the joint commission on trade, transport and energy was held in Tashkent on 20 April 2015.
Representatives of several ministries, departments and economic unions of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan participated in the session of the commission.
Afghan delegation included representatives of the Ministries of agriculture, irrigation and husbandry, public works, transport and civil aviation, trade and industry and healthcare.
Opening session of the commission, Elyor Ganiev said the second session of the joint commission on trade, transport and energy will help to develop trade-economic relations between two nations.
Uzbek Minister said that Uzbekistan supports development of trade-economic and investment relations with Afghanistan.
He underlined that mutual trade between two states reached almost US$1 billion in 2011, but the trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan fell several times. Ganiev said that mutual trade between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan can be several times higher.
Elyor Ganiev said that Uzbekistan is ready to supply automobiles, buses, agriculture equipment, home appliances, food products, cables, pharmaceutical products and other goods to Afghanistan.
He stated that the companies of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan signed export contracts for US$185 million to supply goods and services.
Uzsanoatexport is completing work on opening of the Uzbek-Afghan trade house in Kabul, he said.
Ganiev also called to rapidly complete the project on creation of Trans-Afghan transport corridor, which will provide fast and cheap access to ports at Indian Ocean to the Central Asian countries.
Uzbek Minister recalled that Uzbekistan participate in realization of infrastructure projects in Afghanistan. He said that specialists from Uzbekistan participated in construction of railway Hayraton-Mazar-i-Sharif. He added that Uzbek specialists are ready also to take part in construction of Mazar-i-Sharif-Heart railroad.
In his turn, Humayun Kayumi underlined existence of huge potential of cooperation in various spheres of economy and highly rated economic reforms in Uzbekistan directed at diversification of industries and modernization of the enterprises.
He expressed his satisfaction with development of trade-economic relations between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. He underlined the role of Uzbekistan in rehabilitation and further development of economy of Afghanistan via realization of infrastructure projects.
During the meeting, the presentations of economic and export potential of Uzbekistan, as well as priority directions of mutual beneficial cooperation were held.
At the meeting, the participants exchanged opinion on economic potential of two states, as well as opportunity to increase the volume of mutual trade and cooperation in developing of regional transport and transit communications.
The volume of mutual trade between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan made up US$444.5 million in 2015 and US$429 million in 10 months of 2016.
About 70 enterprises with Afghan capital, including 20 companies with 100% Afghan investments, operate in Uzbekistan. They provide services, trade facilitation services, produce construction materials.
