UNDP projects helps to improve social services to elder people

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A project “Improving Quality of Social Service Delivery for Persons with Disabilities and Lonely Elderly People” covered about 17,000 single elder people and people with special needs.
The project was implemented in 2014-2016. Initially, the UNDP project was implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of Uzbekistan. After the ministry reorganized into the Ministry of Labour, it was realized in collaboration with the Ministries of Labour and Healthcare.
The project helped the Government of Uzbekistan to improve legislation and quality of social services, provided to elder people and people with special needs.
The project allowed to expand a list of persons, who have right to receive state social services and social aid. In particular, single people and people with disabilities, who are not pensioners, started to receive monthly set of food and hygienic products.
Number of monthly free products, provided to single elder people and people with disabilities, rose from 9 to 15 names, while total cost of the set grew over twice.
The project also allowed to organize quarterly tours to identify lonely elderly and disabled people who need help and are not covered by social services. During 2016, this helped to provide free sets of products to 150 people. About 300 people started to receive social services at their homes.
Maximum number of visits of social workers to homes rose from 2 to 7 times a week.
Minister of Labour of Uzbekistan Aziz Abdukhakimov said that it is impossible to solve all existing problems in short period time, but systematic and gradual work on further improving quality of social services will be continued.
