EU Special Representative for Central Asia visits Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 19-20 January, the EU Special Representative (EUSR) for Central Asia, Ambassador Peter Burian paid an official visit to Uzbekistan.
He conveyed a letter from Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy / Vice-President of the Commission to President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. In Tashkent he held talks with government and parliamentary officials and met with representatives of diplomatic corps, EU companies and civil society of Uzbekistan.
During a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Dr. Abdulaziz Kamilov Ambassador Burian passed a letter from High Representative Mogherini addressed to President Mirziyoyev. The letter congratulates the President on his election and expresses the significant interest of the EU to further develop relations with Uzbekistan and to cooperate closely with the new government.
Minister Kamilov and the EU Special Representative discussed current international and regional developments. In particular, Ambassador Burian commended the leadership of Uzbekistan for its constructive engagement with neighboring countries, as well as the outreach to other international partners, including the EU. He thanked Minister Kamilov for hosting the next EU-Central Asia meeting of foreign ministers in Uzbekistan in the autumn of 2017.
The EU Special Representative was received by Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade, H.E. Mr. Elyor Ganiev. Ambassador Burian emphasized the importance of further economic reforms in order to facilitate closer trade and investment relations between the EU and Uzbekistan.
The parties discussed the EU projects in support of rural development in Uzbekistan, as well as the next steps following the consent of the European Parliament to the EU-Uzbekistan Textile Protocol in December 2016 designed to improve trade in cotton and textile products. These issues were further discussed with the leadership of the state company Uzbekengilsanoat.
At the meeting with First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of Oliy Majlis, H.E. Dr. Sodiq Safaev and the EU Special Representative the parties considered options and perspectives for further deepening inter-parliamentary dialogue and trade and investments relations between the EU and Uzbekistan.
During the meeting with representatives of civil society, the current situation and trends in the area of democracy and human rights in the country were discussed. Ambassador Burian pointed to the indispensable role of civil society in the political life and the overall development of the country, including sufficient safeguards for human and political rights.
These issues were also raised during the meetings with the above-mentioned government and parliamentary officials. The EU Special Representative commended planned initiatives of the Government of Uzbekistan for 2017 under the Year of Dialogue with People and Human Interests.
Ambassador Burian held meetings with representatives of EU companies and diplomatic community to exchange views on the current economic and political developments in Uzbekistan.
