Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Overhead metro will be constructed in Tashkent instead of high-speed double-track railway, Uzbekistan Temir Yollari (Uzbekistan Railways) said.
On 19 May 2017, President of Uzbekistan signed a resolution to approve a project on construction of an electrified high-speed double-track ring railway in the city of Tashkent.
Uzbekiston Temir Yollari said that initially it was planned to launch movement of electric trains within the project. But after review of the project, it was decided to construct overhead metro.
In initial project, it was planned to construct double-track railway with the length of 72.1 km, including 6 km of overpasses and bridges.
Taking into account that railway will pass through densely populated areas with well-developed infrastructure, the project was updated.
In order to avoid mass demolitions of buildings, the decision was adopted to construct overhead metro in Tashkent city.
Boshtransloyiha developed a new project, which envisages construction of metro railway with the length of 52.1 km. The overhead metro will intersect with existing, under construction and planned underground metro lines. The construction period, taking into account the preparatory period, is 4 years (2017-2021)
Presumably, number of aboveground metro stations will be 35. The preliminary cost of construction of overhead metro is US$422.3 million.
The overhead metro will pass through Yashnaabad, Yakkasaray, Uchtepa, Shaikhantahur, Almazar, Yunusabad, Chilanzar and Sergeli districts of the Uzbek capital.
Uzbekiston Temir Yollari said that construction works on new metro lines – Sergili and Yunusabad – are underway.
