Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- An international seminar entitled “Innovations on use of marginal water resources for sustainable agriculture and food security” is taking place in Tashkent on 11-13 December.
The event was organized by the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources and the International Center for Biomedicine in Salinity (ICBA).
Experts from 16 countries (from the United States, Russia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Afghanistan, India, Afghanistan, Japan, Poland, Slovakia, the United Arab Emirates, and CIS countries) arrived in Tashkent representing various international organizations, research institutes and regional centers dealing with issues effective water use and management of water resources, including for agriculture, development and implementation of innovative solutions for use of marginal water resources and activities for the maintenance of ecosystem services, with a view to contribute to the sustainable development of the region.
Uzbekistan belongs to countries with limited water resources, which in the future can have a negative impact on development of economy and standard of living of the population. Of all the countries of Central Asia, Uzbekistan is the most vulnerable to water supplies, since it has the largest area of irrigated lands (4.3 million hectares), a high rural population (more than 16 million people) and the highest population density among 5 countries (54.6 people / km2 with a maximum of 520.5 in Andijan region).
At present, the resource approach prevails in the water sector, i.e. the approach of meeting the supply, and not the regulation of demand, which inevitably leads to water shortages.
In the current situation, it is understood that it is necessary to create new effective legal, economic and scientific bases for improving the water management system in the country, including taking into account the potential of using marginal water and land resources.
The objectives of international workshop were to discuss the complex relationship between water quality, agriculture and food security problems. The final discussions and recommendations within the framework of the seminar can make an important contribution to implementation of the state goals of the development of the regional strategy for water resources management and policies for use of secondary water resources, salinization of mineralized waters, use of thermal waters, etc.
Particular attention will be paid to the role of science and technologies, which contribute to improving water quality and improving food security in Central Asia.
Within the framework of the event, discussion sessions were held in the format of sectional sessions devoted to specific topics for developing recommendations on the integrated use of water resources (including alternative sources of water and bioresources).
The agenda included issues such as improving food productivity with less water, focusing on human potential and increasing the real interest and participation of users, improving the value chain, using best practices and reducing the amount of waste water and minimizing wastewater used in industrial production.
