Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Russia and Uzbekistan plan to build in the South of Uzbekistan is a unique radio telescope “Suffa”: to explore the space, will soon have to prepare a road map of this project, which will strengthen the Russian presence in Uzbekistan and become a symbol of the revival of ties between the two countries, told journalists the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Sergeyev.
A delegation consisting of representatives of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of science and higher education of the Russian Federation visited Uzbekistan. During the visit the officials discussed the project to build a radio telescope Suffa, is designed to receive signals from space in the millimeter wavelength range, said Sergeyev. He recalled that the construction of this 70-meter radio telescope began in 1985 on the plateau Suffa, but in 1991 it was suspended. In 2005, the examination was conducted state of the object.
“Now the level of heads of state decided that the radio telescope Suffa will be completed in the framework of the international Observatory,” Sergeyev said. According to him, this will be the first experience of participation of the RAS in the establishment of an international research center. Russia and Uzbekistan will soon prepare a road map for implementation of the project “Suffa”, so it can be discussed at the highest level of political leadership of the two countries, said Sergeyev. Charter the future of the Observatory has been prepared and is in the final stage of approval in the Ministry of foreign Affairs, he added.
“Millimeter wavelength range allows, for example, to see the sites of the birth of stars, the cores of distant galaxies, in fact — the distant past of the Universe,” —the Vice-President of the RAS Yuri Balega explained.
As the head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, to the present time in the world, built several telescopes with characteristics similar to the operational parameters «Suffa» and therefore “raises the question of positioning the telescope”. But “Suffa” there are a number of advantages, which make this telescope unique, said Sergeyev. “We have identified some very important trends that would confirm the relevance of the construction of the telescope,” he said.
First, still on the territory of Russia radio telescopes operating in the millimeter range, said Sergeyev. Secondly, now we are talking about creating in the world a network of «millimeter» of radio telescopes, and “Suff”» can be one of the elements of such a network. Finally, given the fact that in Russia it is planned to implement the project of the Observatory Millimetron (project Spektr-M) with a 10-meter space telescope designed to study various objects in the Universe in the millimeter and infrared ranges, “Suffa” and the millimetron could make a «unique pair» devices, which no one else in the world, said Sergeyev.
In addition, scientists of Russia and Uzbekistan discuss the possibility of building on the site of the Uzbek Observatory Maidanak another telescope in the millimetre range, which would also work in tandem with the “Suffa”. Sergeyev noted that it would be very interesting part in «Suffa» and scientists from third countries. “I think that over time they will come to the project”, — he said.
According to optimistic estimates, completion of the telescope may be performed by 2024, said Sergeyev. The Russian side will be responsible for directly instrumental part of the project, and Uzbekistan — for the creation of the necessary infrastructure. As for the financial side of the project, if in 2005 its cost was estimated approximately in 50 million dollars, currently at 100 million dollars, said the head wounds.
From the Russian side in the project will involve Physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Lebedev (FIAN), the leading astronomical organization in the country, including the Crimean and Pulkovo Observatory, as well as project institutes, said Baliga. Uzbek scientists participate in the formation of the scientific program “Suffa”, he added.
The project “Suffa” has serious political value, said Sergeyev. It is not only about restoring scientific presence in the former CIS countries. “This is a question not only of science, but also culture and language,” — said the head wounds. Sergeev expressed the hope that the work on the “Suffa” go and Russian experts, and representatives of the Uzbek Diaspora from different countries.
