Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Russia and Uzbekistan have agreed to build a nuclear power plant in the Central Asian country, Uzbek ambassador to Russia Bakhrom Ashrafkhanov told to reporters.
“There is an agreement that the nuclear power plant will definitely be constructed. We are now working on a road map,” he said without disclosing any other details.
It should be noted that Uzbekistan and Russia started cooperation in the field of using atomic energy for peaceful purposes after signing an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in December 2017. At present, two working groups have been set up, which are working on a project to build nuclear power plants in Uzbekistan and in the field of scientific and technological development. Already this year, Uzbekistan has been given a quota for training students in nuclear specialties in Russia.
Earlier, General Director of the State Atomic Energy Corporation "Rosatom" Alexei Likhachev said that the first nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan can be built in Navoi region.
According to him, in the coming days it is planned that the specialists will visit the region to collect the necessary information.
Rosatom proposes to build a station in Uzbekistan with two modern generation III + VVER-1200 units within a time frame that the Uzbek side considers acceptable for itself.
According to Likhachev, the construction will require up to 10 thousand workers. About 1,500 people with the appropriate training will be required to operate the station.
