Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Children and young people in Uzbekistan, which is 60% of population, can be the generation that takes the country to the next level of its socio-economic development if the right investments in youth is made.
For effective implementation of the Law “On State Youth Policy”, it is important to ensure that ongoing reforms reflect the needs, interests and aspirations of children and young people, especially the most marginalized. In addition to providing services to youth, it is important to give them the voice and opportunities for meaningful participation in social, political and economic life.
UNICEF organized a roundtable for media professionals from Uzbekistan’s media houses to highlight issues of youth in Uzbekistan, and to provide them a platform in media to express their views.
“Empowering young people, especially young girls, to envision and build a positive future for themselves and their community is critical for their self-realization and the future of those communities. Meaningful participation strengthens their sense of belonging, their civic engagement, and helps form values and a positive identity,” said Sascha Graumann, Representative, UNICEF Uzbekistan. “UNICEF fully supports the Government’s commitment to engage young people and support them in realizing their rights and potential”, he added.
Engaging young people and taking their opinions into account can help the Government make decisions and improve their implementation. This can also foster social accountability of the government institutions.
