Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 13 December 2018, a delegation of Uzbekistan led by Deputy Prime Minister Aziz Abdukhakimov held talks with the heads of diplomatic missions of Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brazil, China, Cuba, Kuwait, Tunisia, which are members of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC).
During the meeting, WHC members were again familiarized with the latest reforms carried out in all spheres of Uzbekistan’s life, as well as the open political course of the country’s leadership in addressing significant issues on the development agenda of Uzbekistan and improving the socio-economic well-being of the population. It was noted that today, special attention is paid to the study of the cultural and historical heritage of Uzbekistan, the protection and preservation of historical sites, as well as the development of tourism potential, taking into account current international standards and requirements for the development of these territories.
Full information was provided on the measures implemented in accordance with the decision of the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee (July 2018, Bahrain) and the recommendations of the WHC / ICOMOS, as well as ongoing work to restore the attributes of universal value of the Shahrisabz Historical Center.
It was noted that a number of ambassadors had the opportunity to visit Shakhrisabz as part of their participation in the international art festival "Macom" in September of this year.
Representatives of diplomatic missions were informed of the position of Uzbekistan on the intention to continue close cooperation with UNESCO, as well as members of the Committee on these issues, including the development of urban planning with a focus on the social component. It was emphasized that the goal of the Government is primarily to further improve the daily life of residents of areas living within the buffer zones of cultural sites.
WHC members said that the historical heritage of the Uzbek people is unique because includes also a rich intangible heritage. It was emphasized that the cultural heritage of Uzbekistan is closely intertwined with the historical heritage of the Islamic world and is an important part of it. The opinion was expressed that the “Historical center of Shakhrisabz” should be kept on the UNESCO list.
The importance of the development of new approaches by the Organization in cooperation with UNESCO member countries was noted. In this regard, they praised the policy of the Government of Uzbekistan in this area and reported that during the 43rd session of the WHC in July 2019 in Baku, the parties will provide all possible assistance to the delegation of Uzbekistan.
According to the ambassadors, the regular visit to Paris of the representative delegation of Uzbekistan and the intention to engage in dialogue with the Center for Humanitarian Affairs of UNESCO demonstrate the seriousness and determination of the Uzbek side in preserving their cultural and historical heritage.
The parties welcomed the timely provision by Uzbekistan of the entire package of documents on these issues, according to the decision of the Committee, and added that this is always perceived positively from the point of view of the readiness of the Uzbek partners to cooperate with the Organization and WHC.
