Air Quality and Climate Resilience Measures Discussed in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Ahead of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, the Ministry of Ecology of Uzbekistan, together with UNEP, UNDP, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the Embassy of Japan, and the Zamin Foundation, held a thematic event within the framework of the project “Automation of Air Pollution Monitoring.”

The main goal of the meeting was to develop joint proposals to enhance climate resilience, improve air quality, and reduce environmental risks for the population.

“Clean air brings triple benefits: for health, the climate, and economic growth. By tackling pollution from energy, transport, industry, agriculture, and waste, Uzbekistan can protect its citizens, strengthen the economy, and emerge as a leader in Central Asia,” emphasized Arnold Kreilhuber, Director of UNEP’s European Office.

Participants reviewed the results of air quality monitoring in the country, including in the Aral Sea region, as well as UNEP’s study in Termez, where sand and dust storms remain the key source of pollution. A similar assessment is planned for Namangan in 2026.

Experts concluded that developing a national air quality management system and integrating monitoring data into urban planning processes will accelerate the search for effective solutions and help improve the environmental situation.
