JSC “Uzbekgidroenergo”: Consequences of flooding in Andijan region being addressed, victims to receive support
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Residents of the Buvaydin district in the Andijan region, who were affected by flooding, will receive appropriate compensation. This was reported by JSC “Uzbekgidroenergo.”
The company reminded that the construction of the small hydroelectric power station "JFK-3" on the Southern Ferghana Canal is being carried out in accordance with the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan from 31 December 2021. The project is financed by the Russian financial institution "MPR," and the construction work is being carried out by the Russian company "Energosila" on a turnkey basis.
The planned capacity of the hydroelectric power station is 6.9 megawatts, with an annual electricity production volume of up to 33 million kilowatt-hours. As part of the project, a water retention structure was built to regulate water supply during the growing season. To achieve this, the main water flow was temporarily redirected through a bypass canal.
However, the actual water flow in the bypass canal exceeded the planned figures: instead of the expected 60 cubic meters per second, the flow reached 70 cubic meters, causing erosion of the right bank of the Southern Ferghana Canal.
As emphasized in the statement, all necessary measures are currently being taken to eliminate the consequences of the emergency situation. Repair and restoration work is being carried out at an accelerated pace with the involvement of required machinery and labor resources.
It is expected that by 14:00 on 9 May 2025, the canal will be fully restored and returned to its normal operational mode.
JSC “Uzbekgidroenergo” assured that residents whose homes and household plots were damaged by the flooding will receive compensation for their losses.
According to UzHydromet, a total of 560 households were affected by the flood.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) press service reports that the incident on the Southern Ferghana Canal caused water to enter approximately 100 households.
Of these, water entered 30 homes directly, and 70 households had water on their plots.
