New Bridge at Tashkent Airport: 693 Meters of Innovative Construction Built to International Standards
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The reconstruction of the old bridge and the construction of a new overpass in front of Tashkent International Airport has been completed at a total cost of 511 billion soums.
The details were shared with the newspaper O‘zbekiston Bunyodkori by Bobur Elmuradov, the project manager from JSC Kuprikkurilish.
Originally built in 1967 and renovated in 2008, the bridge became the focus of a large-scale project presented to the President in May 2021. While the initial plan envisioned a restoration and a roundabout, the design was later revised to incorporate modern engineering solutions.
Under the updated concept, a new viaduct was erected alongside the existing structure, constructed using a combined prefabricated and monolithic technology.
According to Elmuradov, the project utilized 42-meter beams, with the main section complemented by four exits and two monolithic cloverleaf interchanges — technical solutions never before implemented in Uzbekistan. The installed barriers on the bridge can rotate 360 degrees to minimize damage in the event of an accident.
The four-lane bridge stretches 693.5 meters in length and 62 meters in width. For public convenience, spacious pedestrian paths 15 meters wide and cycling lanes 13 meters wide were built, along with an integrated irrigation system.
The bridge can accommodate up to 5,000 vehicles per hour, or 132,000 per day.
Yuri Ipatov, head of the project’s consulting team, noted that the overpass is a unique engineering structure requiring exceptional precision and expertise in both construction and operation. The project was implemented in line with international standards and global best practices, with active cooperation from Russian engineering institutes.
The bridge is also equipped with a centralized monitoring and digital control system that tracks its technical condition around the clock.
