Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- UNICEF organized a Round Table for media professionals from Uzbekistan’s media houses to highlight immunization issues in Uzbekistan. This event provides journalists with a platform to express their views on how media can inspire parents and other family members to protect their children from vaccine-preventable diseases.
The event is held on the eve of World Immunization Week which is annually commemorated in the last week of April to promote the use of vaccines. The theme this year is ‘Protected Together: Vaccines Work!’
The world has made so much progress. Vaccines now protect more children than ever before. However, according to global data, nearly one in five infants still misses out on the basic vaccines they need to stay alive and healthy. If global immunization coverage improves, 1.5 million lives could be saved.
“Vaccines have enormous potential for reducing childhood illness and death,” said Sascha Graumann, Representative, UNICEF Uzbekistan. “Despite clear evidence that vaccines save lives and control diseases, unfortunately some children are missing out. This puts them at risk, which is unacceptable in a world where affordable, lifesaving vaccines exist.”
“One of the best ways to protect children from diseases is to follow the National Calendar of Immunization. Any time parents delay a vaccine, they increase their kids’ vulnerability to disease,” said Dr. Dilorom Tursunova, Deputy Head of Department on Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
According to global data, vaccination saves up to 3 million lives each year. Vaccines are one of the most cost-effective health tools ever invented – every USD$1 spent on childhood immunization returns up to USD$44 in benefits.
"Vaccines save millions of lives every year and people who contribute to vaccination are genuine “vaccine heroes.” That is why this year during European Immunization Week we want to celebrate vaccine heroes: these are health workers who administer vaccines, parents who choose vaccination for their children, and everyone who seeks evidence-based information and passes it on to empower others," said Dr. Lianne Kuppens, WHO Representative and Head of Country Office in Uzbekistan.
Participants of the Round Table discussed the role of media in disseminating the message that together communities, including parents, can protect everyone through vaccines.
Media managers developed recommendations on raising awareness about the importance of vaccination through mass media channels so all parents, family members and care givers understand the importance of timely vaccination to protect their children from diseases.
