Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 20 November 2019, Westminster International University in Tashkent became the first university in Uzbekistan to be accepted into the global network for sustainable development (SDSN).
SDSN is the United Nations global network of over 700 organizations from 35 countries supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) both locally and globally. The organization's activities are aimed at mobilizing the global, scientific and technical potential of the academic community, as well as to promote practical solutions to sustainable development problems. SDSN can become a unified platform where the government, researchers, entrepreneurs and civil society can help stimulate policy and develop practical solutions to the tasks set for SDSN in Uzbekistan.
SDSN operates under the auspices of the UN Secretary General. Since 2012, its director is Professor Jeffrey Sachs, one of the most influential world-class economists who visited the Westminster International University in Tashkent in May 2019. One of the outcomes of this visit was that the university was accepted into the global network for sustainable development (SDSN) and received the status of "the host organization of SDSN in Uzbekistan."
As the host organization, WIUT will unite other universities and research organizations to better understand and develop an approach to the National Development Goals of the Republic of Uzbekistan along with the Government’s concepts of moving to an industrialized country by 2030, providing a high standard of living.
Teachers, researchers and students of other universities in Uzbekistan will also have access to a global online communications platform called “SDSN Mobilize”, which in turn will lay the foundation for cooperation with world experts in the field of sustainable development, event development and new sources of funding. Youth involvement is an important part of mobilizing the next generation in creating innovative solutions in the economic and social spheres.
It should be noted that for Uzbekistan, membership in the SDSN is a new step in integrating the republic into the world community. WIUT hopes that universities and research centers will take advantage of the opportunities created by this network to achieve their objectives. At the same time, WIUT believes that over time the number of SDSN members in Uzbekistan will increase. In this regard, the Center for Applied Research of the University coordinates all issues related to the activities of the SDSN, and will also provide any advisory assistance in this matter.
