Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – On 5-6 December 2019, a delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by the First Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Sodik Safoev paid a visit to the United Kingdom as part of the widespread informing of British political and public circles about the processes of large-scale reforms in the republic, as well as the upcoming parliamentary elections and local Kengashes of people's deputies of our country, the Foreign Ministry reports.
According to the information of the Embassy of Uzbekistan, on 5 December, a round table was held in Cambridge with the participation of representatives of academic and expert circles of Great Britain. The event was organized with the support of the Cambridge Central Asia Forum and the Center for Development Studies of the University of Cambridge.
At the round table, a high assessment was given to the process of political and economic modernization of Uzbekistan, the pragmatic and constructive foreign policy of the republic, contributing to the strengthening of stability in the region.
In addition, representatives of a British university expressed interest in developing cooperation with research and educational institutions of the republic.
On 6 December, a media briefing was organized at the Embassy of Uzbekistan in London with the participation of representatives of British socio-political, business and expert and analytical circles, as well as compatriots and journalists, leading media. During the discussion, the British side noted that the upcoming parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan are an important step on the road to further democratization of the country. At the same time, the organizational and legal conditions created in the republic indicate that the electoral process in the republic will take place openly and transparently in accordance with international standards.
The event was also attended by a group of British experts who will soon be heading to Uzbekistan as international observers from the United Kingdom in the 22 December elections.
During the visit, the delegation held a number of bilateral negotiations, including with the President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Suma Chakrabarti, who praised the transformations in the republic and noted the progressive nature of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the EBRD, including plans to increase funding and expand the bank’s presence in regions of the republic.
