A delegation of Uzbekistan takes part in the IAEA General Conference

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Last Friday, the 64th session of the IAEA General Conference, which this time was held in a hybrid format, with the physical presence of delegates and demonstration of video messages, completed its work in the Austrian capital, Dunyo news agency reported.
In a welcoming statement, Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi stressed that the IAEA, despite the situation with the coronavirus pandemic, continued its work to assist countries in the peaceful use of nuclear technology. He emphasized that the IAEA has provided assistance in the fight against coronavirus to 123 countries. He called on Member States to support the IAEA’s ZODIAC project to combat zoonotic diseases.
About 134 Heads of Delegation, including one Prime Minister and 41 Ministers, took part in discussions during the plenary sessions, who noted the role of the IAEA as a leader in the development and implementation of existing and potential new nuclear technologies.
A delegation of our country headed by the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Alisher Sultanov and the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Austria Abat Fayzullayev took part in the conference.
Alisher Sultanov, who spoke via video conferencing, informed the audience about the success of our republic’s interaction with the IAEA in various fields of nuclear science application, intensifying cooperation in the development of the country’s nuclear energy infrastructure.
For example, the Agency provided assistance to Uzbekistan in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The three leading medical institutions of the republic - the Institute of Virology, the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, as well as the laboratory of sanitary and epidemiological surveillance - were sent kits of test systems to determine the COVID-19 virus, for a total amount of 405 thousand euros.
The report highlighted the successful cooperation of the organizations of Uzbekistan and the Department of Technical Cooperation of the IAEA. Only this year, Samarkand State University received equipment for its educational laboratories, a modern spectrometer for the diagnosis of complex diseases was supplied to the Institute of Endocrinology. During the conference, it was informed that a decision was made to supply equipment worth about 450 thousand euros to the Namangan Cancer Center.
During the General Conference, numerous events (side events) were organized, dedicated to the cooperation between the IAEA and the participating countries.
The Saving Women’s Lives side event was dedicated to an IAEA / Islamic Development Bank initiative to expand access to cancer diagnosis and treatment for women in developing countries. The event was attended at the level of the Deputy Minister of Health of Uzbekistan. The successes achieved in recent years in the health care of Uzbekistan, the role of the IAEA and the IDB in strengthening the material and technical base of the country’s medical institutions were noted.
The videoconference dedicated to the development of the infrastructure of nuclear energy in Uzbekistan was attended by the First Deputy Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan and Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Industrial and Defense Industry. The specialists discussed the priority tasks of preparing the IAEA expert mission, scheduled for December 2020.
At the “Strengthening Nuclear Material Accounting and Control Systems” event, a new IAEA initiative was presented to improve the efficiency of government nuclear material accounting and control systems. Deputy Director General of the IAEA, Head of the Department of Safeguards M. Aparo expressed special gratitude to Uzbekistan for agreeing to be among the first countries to take part in joint work to strengthen the country’s regulatory body. He highlighted the actions of the Uzbek Embassy in Vienna and the regulatory body, which made it possible to organize a successful mission of IAEA inspectors to Uzbekistan in September this year.
At the side event "The Role and Significance of Research Reactors", which was attended by over 130 representatives from various countries, a presentation by specialists from the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan was among the first. It noted the success of the institute in the safe operation of a research reactor, leadership positions in the production of radioactive isotopes.
At the final meeting of the IAEA General Conference, it was noted that despite the complexity and unresolved issues, the Agency continues to maintain its position in assisting countries to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, ensure safety in the operation of nuclear facilities, and develop and introduce nuclear technologies.
