Russia and Uzbekistan join forces for long-term water resource forecasting amid glacier melt
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Federal Agency for Water Resources of the Russian Federation will provide expert support to Uzbekistan in developing long-term forecasts for water resources, taking into account climate change and accelerated glacier melt, according to agency head Dmitry Kirillov during the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress in St. Petersburg.
“A constructive expert dialogue is underway with the Republic of Uzbekistan. Our specialists are jointly developing methodologies for assessing the water balance in light of glacier melt projections,” Kirillov stated. “In the short term, this may lead to an increase in water availability, but over the long run — looking 30 to 50 years ahead — it is crucial to understand how the situation will evolve.”
Kirillov noted Uzbekistan’s serious approach to the sustainable management of water resources, highlighting that joint work is already progressing at a professional and technical level.
According to TASS, he also emphasized the importance of sustainable development in the Aral Sea basin, stressing the need for both technical and political solutions. Kirillov suggested that the Nevsky Congress could serve as an effective platform for developing coordinated strategies and enhancing international cooperation in water management and environmental protection.
