Russian gas supplies via Kazakhstan to Uzbekistan may reach 11 billion cubic meters by 2026

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan hosted a meeting between Minister Erlan Akkenzhenov and Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan Bakhtiyor Ibragimov.

During the talks, the parties reviewed in detail the implementation of bilateral “road maps” adopted following high-level visits and discussed the current progress of joint projects. They noted the high level of cooperation in the oil and gas sector and the stable, well-coordinated operation of gas transportation systems.

In the first seven months of 2025, the transit of Kazakh gas through Uzbekistan totaled 921.7 million m³. Special emphasis was placed on Kazakhstan’s role as a key transit partner for Russian gas supplies, which are steadily increasing, with a projected growth to 11 billion m³ annually between 2026 and 2038. The Kazakh side also reaffirmed its readiness to ensure the transit and supply of oil to Uzbekistan.

Regional-scale projects in the electric power sector were also in focus. The parties discussed the progress of the Kambarata HPP-1 construction project, where Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan act as strategic partners. The project has entered an active phase, with the World Bank engaged and an international consultant selected.

The status of the “Green Energy Corridor” project across the Caspian Sea, implemented jointly with Azerbaijan, was also reviewed. A practical step toward this initiative was the establishment, on July 1, 2025, of the joint venture Yasil Dəhliz Birliyi.

Minister Erlan Akkenzhenov emphasized the strategic nature of the partnership with Uzbekistan, noting that both countries are key components of Central Asia’s unified energy architecture.

According to him, joint projects such as Kambarata HPP-1 and the “green corridor” strengthen national energy systems and create long-term stability for the entire region.

The parties agreed to maintain active dialogue at the ministerial level to advance all joint initiatives promptly.
