Trump suspends tariff imposition on over 75 countries

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — U.S. President Donald Trump announced on the social media platform Truth Social that the United States is suspending the introduction of reciprocal tariffs on more than 75 countries.

He stated that, in response to requests from these nations and at his insistence, they refrained from taking retaliatory measures. As a result, the U.S. is implementing a 90-day pause accompanied by a significant 10 percent reduction in mutual tariffs, effective immediately.

However, Trump also announced an increase in tariffs on China to 125 percent, accusing Beijing of "disrespecting global markets." Last week, the U.S. imposed a 54 percent tariff on Chinese goods, to which China responded with 34 percent tariffs on American products.

In retaliation, Washington raised its tariffs to 104 percent, prompting China to increase its rate to 84 percent.

On 2 April, Trump had declared the imposition of reciprocal tariffs on imports from other countries. The base rate was set at 10 percent, though it would be adjusted individually for each country to equal half the rate those countries impose on American goods.

The U.S. President emphasized that the tariff policy is a move toward economic independence and will help direct funds toward reducing the national debt.
