UNDP in Uzbekistan launches a unique platform for sharing success xtories in the fight against poverty

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The first meeting of a new initiative by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), known as UNDP Talks, was held in Tashkent.

The event served as a platform for sharing real-life stories of individuals who have transformed their lives through innovative projects aimed at reducing poverty and improving living conditions.

The gathering took place ahead of the Poverty Reduction Forum and brought together representatives from the government, international organizations, the private sector, and the media. Attendees heard the firsthand accounts of beneficiaries who, with UNDP’s support, launched their own businesses, received essential aid, and contributed to the development of their communities.

Ilkhom Norkulov, First Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan, highlighted that over the past five years, the country has made significant progress in reducing poverty at the local level. He attributed this success to a combination of advanced international approaches, local expertise, and strong support from international partners, financial institutions, and UN agencies.

“The targeted mahalla system has proven effective in addressing social and economic challenges. We see lives changing, and that inspires us to continue our efforts,” Norkulov emphasized.

In 2025, UNDP will celebrate its 60th anniversary of global operations. This milestone serves as both a moment to reflect on achievements and a call to expand successful initiatives further.

“Our goal is to ensure that effective community-level projects reach even more people across Uzbekistan. We must share experiences and inspire each other to achieve greater results,” UNDP representatives noted.

Sabine Machl, UN Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan, shared her impressions from traveling across the country.

“I have met many brave and inspiring women—doctors, teachers, farmers, activists, and members of parliament. Their dedication to positive change is remarkable. These women are true agents of transformation, and their stories prove that even in difficult conditions, success is possible,” Machl stated.

The event also featured photographic exhibits showcasing the successes of UNDP projects, including speeches, moments of participant interaction, and portraits of beneficiaries whose lives have changed through UNDP’s support.

UNDP Talks represents an important step in strengthening dialogue among all stakeholders. Organizers hope that such platforms will become regular events, facilitating the further dissemination of best practices in the fight against poverty.
