Uzbekistan Inspects Nearly 10,000 Apartment Buildings for Seismic Safety
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — An inspection of 9,579 apartment buildings in Uzbekistan has been completed to assess compliance with seismic resistance and earthquake safety standards. According to the Construction and Housing & Utilities Control Inspectorate, 87% of the buildings (8,337 homes) meet current regulations.
At the same time, 1,242 buildings require detailed technical assessments. So far, such inspections have been carried out on 336 structures: 297 confirmed as seismically sound, 71 needing reinforcement, and one building classified as seismically weak.
For 396 buildings of poor construction quality, materials have been forwarded to law enforcement agencies. Around 200 unauthorized structures face legal action, with over 100 already demolished. In 40 cases, serious violations of construction norms were detected, leading to criminal investigations.
The Inspectorate also identified 201 cases of unauthorized additional floors. A notable example is a building in the Yashnabad district of Tashkent, where the developer added 21 floors instead of the permitted 14, violating urban planning regulations. Despite eight written warnings from the Inspectorate, construction continued. Work has now been halted, a court case has been filed to remove the unauthorized floors, and a working group is being formed to assess their seismic safety.
Following 242,208 monitoring inspections by territorial offices, 106,905 written directives were issued, 2,653 administrative protocols were drawn up totaling nearly 40 billion UZS, and low-quality construction works were dismantled in 712 cases.
As of 2025, the Inspectorate’s registry includes 27,372 buildings, with monitoring ongoing.
