Uzbekistan’s WTO Accession Efforts Discussed at High-Level Seminar in Geneva
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A high-level seminar and a series of informational sessions dedicated to supporting Uzbekistan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) were held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The events were attended by Azizbek Urunov, Special Representative of the President of Uzbekistan on WTO Affairs, Davron Vakhabov, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, members of the Public Council for Entrepreneurship Support, and representatives of leading international financial institutions, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, along with both domestic and foreign experts.
The sessions addressed key aspects of Uzbekistan’s alignment with WTO rules, such as the elimination of technical barriers to trade (TBT), compliance with sanitary and phytosanitary standards (SPS), and the harmonization of national standards with international norms. The discussions also highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at liberalizing foreign trade, boosting exports, and improving access to global markets for Uzbek products.
More than ten representatives of Uzbekistan’s business community — including exporters from the agriculture, electrical engineering, and textile sectors — took part in the event and received practical insights into the benefits and opportunities offered by the accelerated WTO accession process.
Additionally, the Public Council for Entrepreneurship Support announced the launch of a nationwide awareness campaign to educate the public about the goals, implications, and benefits of Uzbekistan’s WTO membership.
