Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Ambassador of Uzbekistan in the United States Javlon Vahabov held talks with President of the US Fashion Industry Association (USFIA) Julia Hughes in Washington, DC, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan said.
In the course of the negotiations, prospects for establishing cooperation between our country and leading US retailers in organizing the production of textile products on the orders of American companies were discussed. The USFIA President was thoroughly informed about the measures taken by the Government of Uzbekistan to liberalize the national economy and create a favorable investment climate in the republic.
Special attention was paid to the progress made by Uzbekistan in recent years in eradicating forced labor, which was well reflected in the reports of the State Department and the US Department of Labor, and Uzbek cotton is completely excluded from the “list of goods produced using child labor”.
Julia Hughes noted that the members of the USFIA are watching the rapid progress in Uzbekistan both in economic development and in ensuring human rights. They were thoroughly acquainted with the results of the visit to Uzbekistan last December of the Director General of the International Labor Organization Guy Ryder and the conclusions of this influential international organization on the results of the monitoring of cotton picking in the republic in 2018.
As the head of the association said, the USFIA community regards the visit of US Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross to Uzbekistan in October 2018 as a signal for expanding a comprehensive business partnership with your country. She separately emphasized that currently leading American brands are in search of new suppliers, and imports from Central Asian countries are becoming increasingly in demand.
As a first step in this direction and in order to study the textile potential, she plans to visit Uzbekistan with a working visit in the first half of this year, accompanied by USFIA members.
Following the negotiations with the head of the association, an agreement was reached on holding in February-March 2019 of a round table and presentation of the textile industry of Uzbekistan in New York with the participation of textile brands that are part of the USFIA.
