Uzbek FM receives UN Assistant Secretary-General

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan Abdulaziz Kamilov received Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic in Tashkent on 28 May 2013.
The press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan said that the sides exchanged opinion on wide-range of issues, related to relations between Uzbekistan and the UN.
At the meeting, it was noted that currently Uzbekistan and the UN structures are connected with long-term fruitful cooperation in various areas. First of all, the sides are cooperating in non-proliferation and regional security, overcoming social-economic and ecologic problems in Central Asia, mitigation of Aral catastrophe, fighting international terrorism and drug trafficking.
The sides are supporting constructive dialogue in human rights. It was noted that within the implementation of the Concept on further deepening democratic reforms and forming civil society in Uzbekistan, adopted in 2010, Uzbekistan carries out concrete steps on further liberalization of public-political life, introduction of changes to judicial-legal practice and criminal punishment.
At the meeting, the sides also exchanged opinion on actual international and regional issues.
Mr. Stefan Priesner, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Uzbekistan, participated at the meeting.
