Two killed in Surkhandarya road crash involving illegal street race
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Two people have been killed in a road traffic accident involving Damas and Nexia vehicles in Uzun district of Uzbekistan’s Surkhandarya region, according to the press service of the Road Safety Service of the Public Security Department of the Interior Ministry.
The accident occurred on 28 May at around 23:50 on the 132nd kilometre of the D-169 highway.
According to the authorities, a 17-year-old was driving the Damas vehicle, with four peers in the car. The Nexia was driven by a 20-year-old acquaintance of the Damas driver, and also carried passengers. Neither driver had a valid driving licence.
The participants allegedly engaged in illegal street racing, which led to the collision.
The driver of the Damas died at the scene. One of the passengers in the Nexia later died in hospital. The remaining participants sustained injuries and were hospitalized.
The Road Safety Service also reported that officials held a public discussion in the mahalla where the victims lived as part of preventive measures aimed at avoiding similar incidents in the future.
