Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A ceremony in Samarkand has marked the completion of the first phase of restoration work on the facade of the Sherdor Madrasa in Registan Square, in a joint initiative involving Uzbekistan and the United States.

The event brought together US Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers, Chairperson of the Uzbekistan Culture and Arts Development Fund Gayane Umerova, and US Ambassador to Uzbekistan Jonathan Henick.

The project is being implemented with support from the US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) and is structured in three phases. It focuses on the preservation of the madrasa’s historic facade, including mosaics, majolica tiles, decorative elements and Kufic inscriptions, as well as the development of professional skills among restoration specialists.

During the ceremony, participants presented the results of the completed first phase of restoration work aimed at reviving the architectural appearance of the monument located in Registan Square.

As a key outcome of the event, a five-year roadmap was signed between the Uzbekistan Culture and Arts Development Fund and the US Embassy in Uzbekistan.

The agreement provides for the expansion of joint initiatives in the field of culture and the preservation of historical heritage.
