Uzbekistan Raises Cash FX Limit Without ID to US$500
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan will introduce new rules allowing cash purchases of foreign currency without identity verification starting from 9 August 2026, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan said.
The regulation, developed by the Central Bank and registered on 8 May, increases the threshold for ID-free cash currency purchases fivefold.
Under the new rules, individuals will be able to buy foreign currency in cash at banks up to US$500 without presenting a passport, ID card or other identification documents.
Current regulations require banks to conduct customer due diligence for transactions exceeding US$100. The updated threshold significantly expands the volume of transactions that can be carried out without mandatory identification.
However, banks will continue to apply comprehensive customer verification measures under financial monitoring rules. These include establishing customer identity, verifying the authority of persons acting on behalf of clients, and identifying beneficial owners of funds.
Financial institutions are also required to assess the purpose and nature of transactions or business relationships and continuously monitor operations for consistency with declared customer profiles. Where necessary, banks may also verify the source of funds.
The changes are aimed at simplifying selected foreign exchange operations while maintaining existing safeguards against illicit financial flows.
