Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A major joint healthcare project between Uzbekistan and the Republic of Korea is underway in Tashkent, involving the construction of a modern multi-profile medical facility of Category IV. The expansion of bilateral cooperation in healthcare was discussed during the visit of South Korean Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yun Cheol, who is in Uzbekistan for the 59th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank in Samarkand.
During the visit, the South Korean delegation toured the National Children’s Medical Center in Tashkent and reviewed its operations. A meeting was also held with Uzbekistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev and Health Minister Asilbek Khudayarov.
Both sides noted that healthcare cooperation between the two countries has shown steady progress in recent years, creating a foundation for new joint initiatives. Particular attention was given to the National Children’s Medical Center, built in 2020 at the initiative of Uzbekistan’s president with the participation of the South Korean side. The project cost US$130 million and has become a key example of bilateral cooperation.
A new hospital is now planned on the территории of the center in partnership with the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) of Korea. The total cost of the project is estimated at US$149.8 million, including US$124 million in loans from the Export-Import Bank of Korea and US$25.8 million contributed by Uzbekistan.
The new facility will have a capacity of 300 beds and is expected to create more than 700 jobs. It will also be capable of performing up to 8,500 high-tech surgeries annually. The visiting delegation reviewed the progress of construction during the visit.
The two sides also discussed plans to establish a medical cluster in Tashkent with an estimated value of US$424.3 million, also involving EDCF. The project is seen as the next stage in deepening cooperation in high-tech medicine and further developing the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
